During this time (and always!) it is so important to support the local business in our communities. Plus it’s great for the economy too! We are constantly inspired by the ambition and resilience of local business founders. We feel that the risks that they take lead to innovation and help in moving the world forward.

Inspired by these entrepreneurs and their stories, we recently chatted with Lucinda Gill – owner of Solo House, about being an entrepreneur, running a local business while also running a family, and any advice she has for other local businesses!

What is your business about and why did you start it?

I have been in the hair and beauty industry for over 20 years. I owned my own salon in the UK but sold it after moving to Dubai. I’ve worked with many well-known companies in Dubai and have helped to establish their business and brand. After living here for five years I decided that I had learnt enough to open my own in the UAE.

As well as ensuring women are leaving the salon feeling the best version of themselves, I wanted to ensure that my team also feel secure and comfortable in their work space and personal lives. Giving back to people is something I feel great rewards from. I believe that if my team are happy and positive then my clients will always be happy when leaving our salon.

What do you love about your business?

I love being in the salon everyday and bringing a positive energy and vibe to the salon atmosphere. It is rewarding to teach and train my team to build and develop them and watch them become the best version of themselves.

I love watching clients leave the salon feeling fabulous. It brings great joy to know we have made each clients experience in the salon personal to them.

How do you manage your time between running a business and a family?

It is not easy but at the same time I believe in making sacrifices to then gain return in the long run. I keep my days organized and constructive. My team are always on hand to help me with tasks. I ensure to exercise and eat healthy to keep my mind and body fit and healthy. I am engaged with the salon and really thrive off seeing it grow.

Any piece of advice to other small businesses owners or anyone wanting to start their own business?

I believe that anyone who wants to start their own business can providing they have the vision and the drive to succeed. Its not easy at the beginning but you have to keep the momentum going. No day is the same, there are busy days and slow days but you have to make a plan of action and push through the hard times. I also believe in having a loyal and trustworthy team to help bring my vision to life.
