Cairo's Ramadan Lantern Market

Egyptians throng to local markets in the run-up to Ramadan to buy colorful lanterns, known as fanoos in Arabic, for their children or to use as decorations for their homes and businesses. Buying fanoos is nearly a need for them, as it has been a tradition for decades. The lanterns, which are largely handmade, adorn the streets and tiny alleyways of Egyptian cities.
