We’re lucky to be part of a community with lots of smart and inspiring women who own businesses. This week we had a chat with Monica Bakes, a bakery that offers homestyle American goodies and treats, with a twist.

Owned by Monica Makram, we chatted with her about why she started the business and we cannot be more inspired by her story.

What is your business about and why did you start it? 
It’s all about baking with love and spreading joy with delicious desserts to put huge smiles on people’s faces!
I started it out of a passion for food specifically baking, and loved it so much that I finished my architecture school, only to move on to a pastry degree to make a full-time job out of it, and here we are!

What do you love about your business?
I love everything about it, it has its difficulties and is a learning curve for sure, trying to manage it all!
However, it’s the amazing feedback from the lovely loyal clientele
I have developed that keeps me going and creating!
Being a part of people’s special occasions makes me happy for them to make me a part of it!

 

How do you manage your time between running a business and a family?

It’s difficult, however, I have a supportive husband and my family and friends are very understanding of the fact that it takes a village to open a business, let alone keep it running and successful! So, I have been blessed with the best!

Any piece of advice to other small business owners or anyone wanting to start their own business?

Don’t give up on your dream, if you want it hard enough, you WILL make it happen!
It won’t be an easy journey, but it would be so worthwhile to keep pushing through and persevering, I can promise you that!
It is a bittersweet road to success, so enjoy every life lesson thrown at you and learn to grow through it and come off stronger and better!
