During this time (and always!) it is so important to support local and the small business in our communities. Plus it’s great for the economy too! We are constantly inspired by the ambition and resilience of small business founders. We feel that the risks that they take lead to innovation and help in moving the world forward.

Inspired by these entrepreneurs and their stories, we recently chatted with Lana Rayes – owner of Mindfulness for Children, about being an entrepreneur, running a small business while also running a family, and how she has adapted to the changes that Covid-19 has brought to her business.

What is your business about and why did you start it?

I run a 6 week mindfulness course for children. Mindfulness is a very important life skill for children to learn at a young age. I realized children should be taught how to manage their emotions and control their anxieties. Children are also constantly told to pay attention and focus however they are never taught how to do that. My course helps children develop these crucial skills.

What do you love about your business?

As an adult and looking back in retrospect, I wish I was taught at a young age how to focus, respond rather than react and control my emotions. I think all children should be taught these life skills from a young age. Taking care of your emotional, mental and social needs as a child is just as important as academic capabilities.

How do you manage your time between running a business and a family?

I don’t have kids yet but hope to soon.

How has Covid-19 affected your business and how have you adapted?

I used to hold workshops for parents and educators in order to teach them mindfulness skills and how to apply them with their children or students. Workshops are hard to conduct at the moment. I still prefer teaching my course face to face but so resort to online teaching if needed.

Any piece of advice to other small businesses owners or anyone wanting to start their own business?
