Small Business Spotlight: Divas on Wheels

During this time (and always!) it is so important to support local and small businesses in our communities, and it’s great for the economy too! We are constantly inspired by the ambition and resilience of small business founders and feel that the risks that they take lead to innovation and help in moving the world forward.

Inspired by these entrepreneurs and their stories, we recently chatted with Eugenia and Vanessa – the owners of Divas on Wheels, about being entrepreneurs, running a small business while also running a family, and how they have adapted to the changes that Covid-19 had brought to their business.

What is your business about and why did you start it?

If there’s one thing kids love to do, it’s play grown-ups and do what mummy does! One of those enjoyable things is going to salons to get pampered.

Divas on Wheels is the perfect little pink palace for those girls who just love to be pampered and party in a very unique place. We drive up to the birthday girl’s house and quite literally roll out the red-carpet, we then provide a luxurious little experience on the bus with spa and beauty treatments and finally a disco for her and all her friends.

We started after hosting some parties for our own girls and our friends’ kids. We spotted an opportunity to provide a really unique and different service for Dubai. Our inspiration comes from our own daughters, who are strong, adventurous and also who love doing the
nails, face masks and dancing.

What do you love about your business?

It makes us so happy to see the smile of the girls when the divas bus arrives. We help girls build confidence by offering them a place to be themselves; letting them play, whether it’s princess or a popstar.

How do you manage your time between running a business and a family?

It is all about being organised and working on schedules! Most importantly communicating with each other since we are two families working together on this. Our husbands are both working in tech and marketing, which has given us an enormous support.

How has Covid-19 affected your business and how have you adapted?

It has affected our business – we had only launched about two weeks before the lock-down kicked in, so we had to stop. It took a while to get started as we had to build our venue from scratch and obtain the legality from all government bodies as we were going, we were learning about approvals. It has been a long journey but very fulfilling and happy with the outcome! We just can’t wait to get back to trading.

We have adapted our services in the past month, by creating little DIY home pampering sets for mum and daughter(s) to enjoy their time together at home and through Zoom parties. These have been incredibly successful and we are trying to keep up with the demand. If there is one silver lining to this situation, it is that we have defined a new product and service that has been such a success.

Any piece of advice to other small business owner or anyone wanting to start their own business?

We would say, do not give up in trying to make your idea a reality. It takes time, a lot of effort and patience. Do your research, talk to people to understand what it is required for your business, each business is unique. Finally, and particularly for women, is to believe in yourself, promote your business and yourself… don’t be shy!
