During this time (and always!) it is so important to support local and the small business in our communities. Plus it’s great for the economy too! We are constantly inspired by the ambition and resilience of small business founders. We feel that the risks that they take lead to innovation and help in moving the world forward.
Inspired by these entrepreneurs and their stories, we recently chatted with Divya Jain – owner of Bamboo Bark, about being an entrepreneur, running a small business while also running a family, and how she’s adapted to the changes that Covid-19 has brought to her business.
What is your business about and why did you start it?
Bamboo Bark is a brand focused on eco-friendly and sustainable products like lunch boxes and plates for families in attractive designs.
Our mission is to bring the time tested stainless steel back into our lives to give a healthier living to families and our planet Earth. Our feeding products like lunchboxes, snack boxes, plates etc are made from food grade, high quality stainless steel, are reusable and last for many years without the need for change. Unlike plastics, these are bio-degradable and help us in reducing our plastic footprint.
What do you love about your business?
I love the fact that we are building a business which promotes better health for families. Using materials like stainless steel which are safer for the environment too.
How do you manage your time between running a business and a family?
Juggling time between work and family is a bit of a challenge sometimes but now that kids are slightly older, they are at school for longer hours and I use this time to manage most of the work.
How has Covid-19 affected your business and how have you adapted?
We were to launch our business in the first quarter of 2020, but manufacturing stopped due to lockdowns. We finally launched in October’20. Owing to Covid, many children are still studying from home and adults working from home too. This means sales of lunch boxes are less than expected but we hope to see an increase as the year progresses. We also realized the importance of expanding our product offering to include products like stainless steel plates and beeswax wraps. We are adding on other products too.
Any piece of advice to other small businesses owners or anyone wanting to start their own business?
Like Walt Disney once said ‘If you can dream it, you can do it”. So if you have an idea and are passionate about it, go for it.
