Small Business Spotlight: Adam Bike

During this time (and always!) it is so important to support local and the small business in our communities. Plus it’s great for the economy too! We are constantly inspired by the ambition and resilience of small business founders. We feel that the risks that they take lead to innovation and help in moving the world forward.
Inspired by these entrepreneurs and their stories, we recently chatted with Florien Stuyling de Lange and Stefanie Ebbenhout – owners of Adam Bike, about being entrepreneurs, running a small business while also running a family, and how they have adapted to the changes that Covid-19 has brought to their business.
What is your business about and why did you start it?
Dutch style bicycles for the whole family. Started the company because it was impossible to find a proper and good looking bicycle for a reasonable price. That’s why we decided to design our own bicycles and sell them for reasonable prices so that anyone can enjoy a great bicycle. Besides, no other bicycle beats the Dutch style bicycle!
What do you love about your business?
The bicycles remind us of home. Where we are cycling any time, any day, regardless of the weather. We grew up riding these types of bicycles and now also ride them in Dubai, bringing a piece of Amsterdam to the Middle East.
In this car driven society, it is important to try to be sustainable and active whenever we can.
We love making the Dutch bike available for people in this region now as well. And the best thing is that all sizes are available in the same colours, so the whole family can ride together in style!
How do you manage your time between running a business and a family?
Since we did not have an actual office until now, we have been working from cafes and also from home, giving us the chance to e.g. have lunch with our families. The days we are selling our bikes at the Ripe market, our families come and help set up, pack and keep us company.
And interestingly, both of us got pregnant last year so while trying to make our startup business a success, we were also preparing for the arrival of the babies and dealing with the inconveniences a pregnancy can also bring. Luckily, our business is bringing us so much energy, that we start and end each day with a positive vibe!
How has Covid-19 affected your business and how have you adapted?
We started our business at the start of the pandemic so visiting the factory was not an option. Initially, the manufacturing time for our bicycles was only 6 weeks. As the pandemic stayed on, bicycles gained popularity throughout the world. As a result the lead time for our bicycles has become longer than expected and we had to confirm our next order even before receiving the first one.
Any piece of advice to other small businesses owners or anyone wanting to start their own business?
