Get ready to be inspired and discover the magic of organized living with Kismet Awadalla!

  1. What inspired you to become a home organizer, and how did your journey in this field begin?
I’ve always loved to organize ever since I was a child. I used to organize my toys, stationary and all my stuff, and I would get angry at my sister when she messed things up in our room.
Being an expat and moving houses and countries a lot made me realize how much stuff we tend to accumulate – which we don’t need most of. It also made me an expert in packing and unpacking and creating the most efficient organizing systems for the new places I move in.
The pandemic made people realize the importance of living in calm, neat places as they had to spend a lot of time at their homes. And that’s when Sorted Ny Kismet came to life to help everyone reach their organizing goals, whether by sharing organizing tips and ideas on my social media platform or by offering in-house home organizing services.
  2. Could you share some insights into your approach to home organization and the services you offer to families?
We offer two types of services. First one, is the on-site home organizing services which start by understanding our clients’ organizing needs and goals for the space concerned, then creating a customized plan and purchasing the organizing products needed, moving on to decluttering and purging all unwanted items, and finally bringing the organizing plan to reality and implementing efficient organizing systems for the space.
Our second type of services are consultation services for the DIYers out there. It includes, but not limited to, one-on-one organizing coaching, decluttering sessions and DIY space organizing plans.
We also share home organizing tips and ideas through our social media platforms and through workshops to inspire as many people as possible to get organized.
  3. What are some common challenges mothers face when it comes to organizing their homes, and how do you assist them in overcoming these challenges?
Mothers often encounter various challenges: limited time and energy, the frustration of a never-ending organizing loop, and the overwhelming responsibility falling solely on them. To address these, I work with them on creating efficient and practical organizing systems that ensure long-term maintenance.
By motivating them to make decisive decluttering choices, we overcome the initial overwhelm. I also encourage them to involve their family members and helpers in the process; it not only lightens the load but also ensures sustained system maintenance. This strategic approach breaks the cycle of perpetual organizing.
  4. Can you suggest some practical tips for busy moms to maintain an organized household amidst their hectic schedules?
    Absolutely!
    Here are my top tips:
A- One In, One Out Rule: For every new item entering the house, whether it’s clothing, kids’ toys, or kitchenware, one item must depart. This prevents unnecessary accumulation and keeps spaces clutter-free.
B- Mindful shopping: Pausing and reflecting before making a purchase: Do I really need it? Do I already own a substitute for it? Do I have the space for it? This thoughtful approach prevents the influx of items and makes sure that everything in your home serves a purpose.
C- Put it away, don’t put it down: A minute-long commitment that saves hours of future organization! Always put everything back in its place the moment you’re done with it to avoid accumulation of items and ensuring an effortlessly organized home.
  5. Do you have any favorite organizational tools or strategies that you often recommend to your clients?
One strategy that I believe is very important is creating zones. It’s all about dividing up any space based on its functionality. We customize these zones to match the practical needs and lifestyle of the family. The real trick lies in strategically placing the most frequently used items in the most accessible spots, to create an effortless flow in their daily lives.
  6. In your experience, what are the key areas or spaces in a home that tend to benefit the most from organization, especially for families with children?
I want to say all! But if I have to choose, I would say the kitchen as it’s the heart of the home and practically the engine room where something’s always cooking, quite literally. When the kitchen is organized, it’s like a magic trick that saves families tons of time, energy, and even money and that reflects positively on the whole family and home.
  7. Could you share a success story or a memorable experience where your services made a significant impact on a family’s life?
I have two experiences very dear to my heart that I would love to share.
One, was for a little 6 year old girl’s room. Her room had all her clothes, toys and stationary in a huge mess to the extent that she would feel embarrassed to invite a friend for a playdate. After we organized her room, it turned into a play haven. Even months later, her mother kept telling me how her daughter now enjoys her room, plays with forgotten toys and confidently invites her friends over.
Then, there’s this touching closet project for a child with a disability. Her mom was so happy that it was the first time in her daughter’s life that she’s able to fetch her own clothes from the closet as they were so clearly sorted and organized for her. It might sound simple, but for her, it was a game-changer.
These stories, they’re the real deal. Just goes to show, a bit of organization can bring so much joy and independence to a family’s life, and I’m so grateful to be part of that.
  8. Are there any misconceptions about home organization that you often encounter, and how do you address them?
One common misconception is the belief that organizing is a one-time, quick fix. In reality, achieving and maintaining an organized home requires a continuous commitment, encompassing mindset shifts, purchasing habits, and the incorporation of daily cultivating habits. I guide my clients towards understanding that sustainable organization is a journey, not a destination.
  9. For moms feeling overwhelmed by clutter and disorganization, what initial steps or strategies would you recommend to start the decluttering process? I would advise them to start small so that they don’t feel overwhelmed and hence, become demotivated. Setting a simple daily organizing goal works miracles in the long run. For example they can dedicate just 15 or 20 minutes a day for decluttering a small space in their home, be it just a drawer or cabinet or a specific category. They can use some idle moments in their day for organizing; for example, tackling one kitchen drawer while they’re waiting for dinner to be cooked, or a quick pantry edit when writing their shopping list. These short daily sessions will result in a fully decluttered space in the long run without burning out the moms. It’s amazing how much you can accomplish in bite-sized chunks!
  10. Lastly, how do you envision your role as a home organizer contributing to the well-being and harmony of families within their living spaces?
I see myself as a bit of a change-maker within families. It’s not just about making spaces look good; it’s about crafting a warm, stress-free haven where families can truly flourish together. A tidy home not only brings peace to our minds but also saves families precious time and money. When everything has its place, you spend less time searching for things, and you’re less likely to buy stuff you already own but can’t find. It’s a bit like a practical magic trick that leaves more room for what really matters. By creating effective systems and encouraging simple habits, my aim is to sprinkle a bit of peace, joy, and practicality into every corner of a family’s life at home.
